Pet insurance for vet bills

The vet bill is the easy part.
Knowing what the policy pays is harder.

Annual limits, excesses, co-payments, waiting periods and pre-existing conditions all decide how much of a bill comes back to you. Most people only compare the price.

We explain how each part works, and show what every insurer selling pet cover here publishes about its own plans, dated and linked.

The one thing worth knowing before anything else

Pet policies do not cover conditions your pet already has. That includes anything it has shown signs of before cover starts, and on many policies anything that appears during the first few weeks, the waiting period.

Those waiting periods are applied to the hour. One published dispute involved a dog that fell ill about 12 hours before its 21-day stand-down ended; the claim was declined and the decline upheld. When you start a policy, and with whom, matters more than it looks.

We do not sell insurance

We are not an insurer and we do not give advice. We explain how cover works so you can read a policy with confidence.

Everything here has a source

Insurer details come from each insurer's own site, dated. Where we could not check something, we say so. How we source this site.

Read the wording

Summaries help you compare. The policy wording decides a claim. Read the exclusions, waiting periods and limits before you buy.
